讲座内容介绍

Ecophilia, or the love for more-than-human life, is a fundamental concept that lies at the very heart of affect and ecology in the nineteenth century.Yet a darker and more troubled Romantic sensibility is centrally concerned with emotions that emerge from unpleasant encounters with the natural world, giving rise to affective states that are overtly antagonistic, pessimistic, hateful, and fearful.Such irrational fear of nature may be termed ecophobia, which may be defined as an irrational and groundless fear of the natural world.Emerging from the swamps of ecophobia into the realm of action, tomorrow’s leaders must seek to envision an ecotopia. The term ecotopia designates a place where people can live in harmony with their environment, using appropriate human-scale technology to create an urban dwelling-place that nourishes the creative spirit of all residents.Blake’s visionary poetry admonishes us to realize that in the end, it is not really about the technology; what ultimately matters in building our own ecotopia is the quality of human vision and the extent of our shared commitment to the realization of human potential through creative endeavor. This is the future of ecocriticism.
