2019 ‘Multiple Languages for a Shared Future’ Academic Conference

And the First IAYALS Emerging Scholars’ Workshop

May 31st- June 2nd , 2019

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The 2019 ‘Multiple Languages for a shared Future’ Academic Conference and the First IAYALS (International Alliance of Young Applied Linguistics Scholars) Emerging Scholars’ Workshop is a scholarly event that contextualizes language education research in the state-of-the-art development of China’s Belt and Road (B&R) initiative and participation in global governance. In response to the China’s initiatives, many universities have been launching language programs other than English. The number of teachers teaching languages other than English is growing. Yet, these teachers of languages other than English face significant challenges in teaching, research and promotion. For this reason, we believe that teachers of languages other than English need to broaden their research vision and develop updated research expertise. We also encourage that they work with English language teachers so that they utilize English teachers’ skills to develop research projects and have their publications published in international journals.

To better support the professional development needs of English teachers and teachers of languages other than English, this Conference and Workshop, jointly hosted by School of Foreign Languages of Tongji University, School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Fudan University and School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, invites renowned international scholars to join the dialogue with Chinese academics. The Conference will help familiarize the participants with updated research methods and research case narratives that emerge from real-life professional settings. Through intellectual exchanges, the Conference encourages participants to respond to language issues from multiple perspectives and provides opportunities for emerging scholars to have productive conversations with established academics in language education research. In addition, the event aims to foster capacity among aspiring scholars so that they can be committed to language education research. Teachers of English and of languages other than English can then work together to form communities of scholarship as they transform themselves into scholars with innovative capacity and international perspectives when addressing important language issues in China.

Unlike previous conferences and workshops, we create tailor-made events for language teachers other than English, including Spanish, French, German and Japanese. We will have research methods training in the four languages.  Relevant speakers will also deliver keynote papers in addition to conducting research methods training in specific languages.

The Conference and Workshop is now calling for abstracts in either Chinese or English. Abstracts must be submitted before the deadline of May 1st, 23:59 Beijing Standard Time. Topics of proposals should be relevant to the theme of the Conference.
