讲座内容

Semiotics is the study of signs in action, named semiosis. Semiosis is about meaning making. The study of signs that are meaningful for Education deals with the story behind learning and teaching events, the way teaching and learning are shaped and formed, unraveling the meaning of symbols. Semiosis can be described as any activity or process to discover/analyze the production of meaning. It is part of the perception process. Human learning and cognition can be considered in terms of continually changing signs interacting with their environment. Semiotics focuses on qualitative, analogical sensing rather than semantic reasoning. Nowadays educational meanings are often conveyed through the internet, in an area of meaning making that is defined as “cybersemiotic,” which raises new issues for education. As an inquiry process, educational semiotics integrates the human dimension in its analysis of logical reasoning. The discussion provides an overview of how semiotic analysis may be useful for Education purposes. Through semiotic analyses, educational inquiry moves beyond discourse analysis towards critical discourse analysis. Such analytic processes may focus on cross-cultural symbolic and the relations of power.
