Good News | English Department Students Won the First Prize at the National College Student English Debate Competition

From September 10 to 12, the national final of the 2021 China Universities Debating Championship (CUDC) hosted by China International Communications Group and China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters(CATTI)Examination Project Management Center was held online. A total of 112 university representative teams from the four major regional competitions in the east, west, south, and north of the country participated in the competition.

The contestants engaged in five rounds of intense preliminary debates on topics such as“This house would limit the amount that can be spent by corporations in the course of litigation”and“This house would force fossil fuel companies to pay for the government projects necessary to fight against the effects of global warming.”In the end, Kang Yifei and Yu Jihuan, junior students from the English Department, coached by Gao Weiquan, Zhou Feng, and Hu Ruiyun, represented Tongji University and achieved the national first prize; at the same time, Kang Yifei won the title of“Best Debater.”

Yang Qingfei and Wang Zhenling from the BP Debate Team of the English Department at Tongji University accompanied them throughout the preparation process. They had achieved the first prize in the East China regional competition and the third prize at the national final in the“23rd FLTRP ETIC National College Student English Debate Competition.”During their preparation, Kang Yifei and Yu Jihuan also participated and accompanied them throughout. Congratulations warmly to the four debate teammates who helped each other and showed solidarity!

The BP Debate Team of the English Department at Tongji University was founded by Zhou Feng and Hu Ruiyun. Since its establishment a year ago, the team has attracted many students from the English Department and has become an important second classroom for enhancing oral English proficiency and developing logical thinking skills.
